Certified Nursing Assistant
Gateway To Nursing?
CNAs are some of the most important people that a patient will ever see. These are the people who come in on a day to day basis to check vital signs, to see how the patient is doing in an overall sense, and to help the patient with day to day needs. CNAs not only check a person’s pulse, but they also help people bathe, brush their teeth, eat, and groom themselves. Thus, CNAs are often an emotional support system for a patient. There may be days where the patient only sees this person, and thus, they become a major piece of a patient’s recovery.
CNAs work closely with doctors and nurses to ensure the highest possible care for a patient. Thus, if a person was interested in one day becoming a nurse or a doctor, this position would be an important learning opportunity. Additionally, because of the close contact a CNA has with doctors and nurses, it is also a great way to network and to see the kinds of jobs that are open and available.
A CNA might talk to a doctor who recommends them to another high-paying position or, when a CNA goes on to become an LPN or RN, the connections they made while working as a CNA could help them land a job later on in life.
CNAs are often the first people that a doctor, family member, or social worker will go to if they want to know not only how a patient is doing physically but also how the person is doing mentally. Thus, CNAs learn not only how to take care of a person’s day to day needs, but they also learn how to communicate with a diverse array of people. Thus, the connections a person can make in this job are numerous and can help a person decide further career steps or decisions.
Being a CNA is great preparation to becoming a RN because CNAs often shadow RNs. Additionally, this position allows a person to familiarize themselves not only with medical treatments and policies but also with the facilities themselves. This way, if a person goes into RN work, they know exactly what to expect in terms of the duties and hours and schedules. Once a person has this experience and knowledge, it then gives them an advantage when they go back to school to become an RN. They will already have the basic knowledge and will be miles ahead of people who do not have this experience.
