Work Life as a CNA
CNAs are some of the most important people a person will meet. They are the people who come into a patient’s room, bathe them, feed them, and check their vital signs. In short, they are the people who help maintain a person’s day to day progress. Without CNAs, hospitals and other healthcare facilities would not be able to function. They are a major piece of such a facility’s innerworkings.
Because of the nature of a CNA’s position, it is important that a person in this field be patient, caring, empathetic, and motivated. It is not easy to have to bathe a person: It can be humiliating for the individual, and it can be physically demanding on the CNA. Thus, a CNA has to be efficient with their tasks and have a good sense of humor. If a CNA can make a person feel comfortable, it can not only make the day to day duties easier, but it can improve a person’s health and speed up the recovery.
Part of a CNA’s job is to anticipate what needs to be done. This way, a patient’s health is not affected, they feel upbeat because they are clean, fed, and groomed, and hygiene is at a high standard. A CNA has to be detail-oriented and meticiulous because they are the people who check on a person’s vital signs. If something is a smidge wrong or concerning, a CNA should be the first to notice this and will tell their supervisor, a nurse, or a doctor.
One of the best or most rewarding pieces of being a CNA is that you get to see your effects on a person first-hand. You are the one who sees them smile on the days they feel well enough to sit up without help. In fact, some of the relationships between a CNA and a patient can last a lifetime. When a person is left truly vulnerable, they learn to trust and respect the person who is caring for them.
It is important that a CNA be caring. There will be days where a person is in chronic pain and will be upset at the world. This makes taking care of the person that much more difficult. Thus, it is important that the CNA realize that this anger is not directed at them. A CNA can make or break a bad day. A caring CNA will weather the storm with a smile, and thus, this positivity can spread and infect the patient so that they forget their pain.
